Tycoons turn philanthropists to dig deep into pockets
Corporations are rushing to lend a hand to quake victims in the country's southwestern region, but what about well-heeled individuals?
Perhaps taking a cue from his boss Li Ka-shing, whose Li Ka Shing Foundation pledged 30 million yuan (HK$33.4 million) to the cause, Hutchison Whampoa group managing director Canning Fok Kin-ning yesterday promised a donation of HK$5 million.
Given that the sum is less than 3.4 per cent of his income of HK$148 million last year, it is a mere drop in the ocean for Hong Kong's highest-paid listed company executive of the past decade. But the heart matters more, and every cent counts.
Mr Li's younger son, Richard Li Tzar-kai, donated 20 million yuan to the China Red Cross.
Also donating in a personal capacity are the sons of Henderson Land Development founder Lee Shau-kee. Peter Lee Ka-kit and Martin Lee Ka-shing jointly pledged 7 million yuan through the Centum Charitas Foundation.
