Poverty-stricken children from Inner Mongolia will share the latest donation raised for them in Hong Kong with Sichuan's earthquake victims.
The Amity Foundation, a non-governmental organisation based in Nanjing, this week launched a campaign to raise money in Hong Kong for 500 girls in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region through a charity art and handicrafts market in East Point City shopping mall in Hang Hau.
More than 30 Primary Four to Six pupils of CCC Kei Wa Primary School performed traditional Mongolian dancing during the market's opening ceremony, promoting the foundation's Inner Mongolia Scholarship.
Organiser Leo Lu Kwong-fai said he hoped to raise HK$1 million in 18 days, with half going to those at the epicentre of Sichuan's earthquake.
'Just when I thought we had sorted out a way to raise money for the Inner Mongolian girls came a serious catastrophe in Sichuan,' said Mr Lu, a former school principal known as 'mountain dog principal' for his treks across China's hills helping poor children get an education.
'I hope Hong Kong people living in this fortunate place, which is far away from natural disasters, will give their helping hands to those in need.'
