Chung Pak-kwong is disappointed the government provides no additional resources for tertiary education institutes to support elite athletes who pursue academic studies. Represented by Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, the government recently met all University Grant Committee-funded institutions to discuss a more structured academic support programme for athletes. This included more flexible schemes for athletes to complete their studies, establishing bridging programmes for athletes to meet academic requirements and providing special assistance through a mentor scheme. Chung said all of the initiatives would cost money, but the government had made no promises about injecting funds. 'They have asked universities to provide more support for athletes but have never mentioned where the resources will come from,' he said. 'We support a number of athletes from our own budget and it will be difficult for us to expand the programme unless there are new resources.'
