It might be hard for people living in an affluent society like Hong Kong to imagine the suffering of the poor.
Our biggest worry is which restaurant to choose. And when we're 'finished', our plates are full of leftovers.
According to research, these leftovers amount to 115 tonnes a year. The money needed to deal with our leftovers is HK$130 million a week, which is enough to support 2.8 million children. Meanwhile, 25,000 people around the world die every day because of hunger.
Organising activities, such as the annual 30-Hour Famine, is only a short-term solution.
We should teach children from a young age not to waste food and raise their awareness of poverty. We should spread the message to our friends and relatives.
Also, rich families could donate money to the needy and restaurants could let customers choose the amount of rice they need, so there would be no leftovers.
