Mobile operator records net addition of 7.4m users in April Despite slower growth last month, China Mobile, the nation's largest mobile operator, remained on track to reach this year's target of adding 80 million users, analysts said. China Mobile last month added 7.41 million subscribers, bringing its total to 399.5 million. However, net additions were fewer than 7.78 million in March and were the lowest since February. A China Mobile spokesman said the decline in net additions was mainly a result of seasonal weakness. 'There was no special reason contributing to the decrease in new subscribers,' said Daiwa Institute of Research telecommunications analyst Marvin Lo. 'The company is still confident of adding 80 million new subscribers this year.' With more than 7 million users added in each of the past four months, China Mobile could gain 84 million new subscribers if the pace is maintained. 'The company needs to add 6.67 million new users each month to achieve the 80 million target,' Mr Lo said. Smaller rival China Unicom added only 1.5 million mobile phone users in April, down from 1.62 million a month earlier, taking its total to 168 million. The company signed up 1.21 million users for its GSM network last month, compared with 1.32 million in March, boosting total GSM users to 125.43 million. The company also gained 289,000 users for its CDMA business, taking the total to 42.81 million. Its CDMA prepaid service had added only 23,000 new users by the end of last month, down from 26,000 in March. 'China Unicom seems to have stopped marketing its CDMA service as its prepaid service recorded a drop in net user additions this year, amid market rumours that China Telecom could buy Unicom's CDMA business in the forthcoming industry restructuring,' Mr Lo said. Fixed-line carriers saw smaller line losses last month, which analysts said was a result of near-completion in the clean up of their Xiaolingtong wireless service. China Telecom said its fixed-line users fell 880,000 last month, mainly for the Xiaolingtong service, to 216.29 million. That was smaller than the 920,000 loss recorded in March. The company added 650,000 broadband users last month to 38.36 million. China Netcom Group Corp saw a 320,000 contraction in fixed-line telephone users to a total of 108.7 million last month, after losing 504,000 subscribers in March. Its broadband business added 462,000 users last month to a total of 22.12 million.
