Author Philip Pullman's best-selling and award-winning novel The Golden Compass was successfully brought to life on the silver screen. And every inspired movie needs a soundtrack of equal inspiration. Thanks to award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (Golden Globe for The Painted Veil, Oscar nomination for The Queen), the CD is a haunting and dynamic collection of 25 tracks created for a movie that is a mixture of Narnia and Lord of the Rings. Pullman's story allowed Desplat to create 'a musical land where Maurice Ravel could meet Duke Ellington, Jean Sibelius, Maurice Jarre as well as my own Greek heritage, all under the aurora of the Northern Lights'. Each track paints a wonderful image and reflects elements of what is happening in the story. The final track Lyra, written and performed by Kate Bush and featuring the choristers of Magdalen College, Oxford, is an ode to the lead character Lyra. Unfortunately, it's the weakest track, as the music and lyrics are the exact opposite of Desplat's creative achievements: uninspired. But this is the only low point. The soundtrack is wonderful and fans of the movie will find this CD a great complement to the DVD release of the movie.
