New romantic comedy Special A sees two students battle in every area of life. The original manga by Maki Minami is currently being serialised in the bimonthly anthology magazine Hana to Yume (Flowers and Dreams) by Hakusensha publishers. The anime is produced by GONZO, whose previous works include Afro Samurai, Full Metal Panic! and G.I. Joe Sigma 6. The story centres around Hanazono Hikari and Takishima Kei who were introduced to each other as six-year-olds by their pro-wrestling-loving fathers. An avid wrestler herself, Hikari is undefeated among her peers, so challenges the aloof Kei only to lose almost instantly. Unable to accept the loss, Hikari challenges him over and over again with the same result. She also swears to herself that she will start beating Kei in everything from academics to sports. To achieve her goal, Hikari attends to the same schools as Kei, currently the super elite Hakusenkan, which is costing her carpenter father an arm and a leg. But Hikari is yet to beat Kei at anything and he constantly mocks her, calling her 'Miss Number Two'. As top students, both protagonists are in the 'Special A' class that is reserved for the top seven students in each grade. There are many benefits and privileges: their home room is an opulent glass house referred to as 'the school's paradise', and class attendance is optional. Keep an eye out for the show on cable channel Animax to see if Hikari ever beats Kei and if Kei will ever realise he's in love with his arch-rival.
