The ultra-portable IdeaPad U1010, which was awarded 'best of show' among notebook personal computers at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in the United States, delivers as promised in terms of beauty and performance. It is the flagship product in the new line of IdeaPad entertainment and fashion-oriented laptop PCs from Lenovo, maker of the business-focused ThinkPad notebooks. Objet d'art The aluminium-alloy cover on the U1010 has a unique etched surface that gives it a striking, textured look and feel. The design almost qualifies the laptop for gallery space. It is available in shiny black, reminiscent of formal evening attire, and a flashy, eye-catching red. The laptop features an 11.1-inch screen that is enhanced by Lenovo's Frameless Screen design, allowing it to reach the edges of the top cover, like an infinity swimming pool. Other design touches include hidden touch-sensitive buttons across the top of the keyboard and a clamshell-style lid, with an ergonomically beneficial hinge. Safety first For peace of mind, the U1010 dispenses with passwords and fingerprint-recognition for notebook protection. It comes with VeriFace log-in and authentication software, which helps control access to a notebook by recognising when its owner is sitting at the keyboard and even recording the faces of others who try to access the system. Lenovo has also added its Active Protection System, which continuously monitors movement of the notebook. It stops the hard drive to help protect against damage when a fall is detected. The works With its ThinkPad pedigree, the latest IdeaPad does not skimp on key performance-boosting system features. It comes with Intel's Centrino Duo processor technology, the Windows Vista operating system, 1 gigabyte of memory, a 120GB hard-disk drive, a built-in camera for video-conferencing, Ethernet and Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-fi support, a six-in-one card reader, a Dolby Home Theatre speaker system and an external DVD player/burner. Prices for the IdeaPad U1010 start at HK$13,998.
