Kingsoft Corp, a software and online game developer, said second-quarter sales would be 3 per cent lower than expected because of the three-day national mourning for victims of the Sichuan earthquake.

'Online game operators were forbidden to provide services from May 19 to 21, so we lost about 3 million [HK$3.37 million] to 4 million yuan during the period,' said Kingsoft chairman Kau Pak-kwan.

'As many young people donated money to Sichuan, they spent less on the internet.'

Mr Kau said the Beijing-based company had donated 2 million yuan to disaster relief so far. The company's office in Chengdu was affected but had already resumed operations, he said.

'The construction of our new office building in Zhuhai, Guangdong will also be completed soon and begin production.'

Kingsoft saw 76 per cent growth in sales to 556.6 million yuan last year from the previous year while net profit increased 65 per cent to 164.6 million yuan. First-quarter results are due out this week.
