For most of us, when we're faced with a closed cupboard, our curiosity gets the better of us and we want to see what's inside. Faced with 100 cupboards, panic would set in. Which one to open first?
100 Cupboards begins with a classic situation: 12-year-old Henry York's parents have disappeared and he has been packed off to live with his aunt and uncle on a farm in Kansas.
Henry's bedroom at the farm is in the attic. Henry  is quite pleased to be living with his aunt and uncle and three cousins.  He can ride in Uncle Frank's old truck and play with the junk his eccentric uncle likes to collect. But one night, while Henry is lying in bed, a chunk of plaster falls off the wall behind the bed and hits him on the head. To his astonishment, he sees two doorknob-like objects sticking out of the wall.
With the help of his cousin Henrietta, he  pulls off the rest of the plaster to discover an entire wall of cupboard doors. Most of the cupboards are locked, but Henry manages to open a couple of them and peer inside.
In the first one he can definitely see a yellow room and a man's trouser leg moving around. When Henry opens another door, wind and rain gust into the room. The two cousins decide to investigate further.
100 Cupboards is a highly imaginative story.  A wonderful, shivery read!
