Yu Chengwei, 32, lives in a village in Beijing's outskirts, near Du Zhuang, in Shunyi. He married into a family of three daughters, who also live in the village. They all grow vegetables to sell at market, and breed sheep for their own consumption. On their wall, next to the television, is a poster of Deng Xiaoping, Mao Zedong, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao.

We often hear horror stories of how rough things are for the farmers in China. You are all farmers. Have the Olympics improved your situation?

Our situation is hundreds of times better than it used to be, but I don't see how it can be anything to do with the Olympics.

Why has it improved then?

Lots of reasons - the government has stopped all the taxes we used to pay, we can grow whatever crops we want now, and we can sell them at the wholesale market down the road or take them into Beijing. I even have my own car, so I can go into town very easily. And there are other things, for instance you see those roadworks out there? That's going to be a water pipe, to bring running water into every person's house. Although it's free now - we will have to buy a card and pay for it once it's installed - it will make life much more convenient.

What do you think of the Olympics?
