Prosten Technology Holdings, whose technology helps mobile-telephone users search for music to download to their handsets, said its number of users had risen to 100 million compared with about 40 million a year ago.

The company said its users downloaded an average of two to three songs a month.

'We define active users as those who download more than three songs per month, while very active users download more than five songs per month,' said Guan Mingjie, chief executive of Prosten Technology. 'We expect active users will account for a greater proportion of our total users.'

In January last year, the company signed an exclusive agreement with China Mobile, the country's largest mobile-phone operator, to co-operate on wireless music search services. China Mobile charges users two yuan (HK$2.25) per song and shares this revenue with Prosten.

Mr Guan declined to say how much Prosten gets per song or how many active users it has.

'According to industry research, there are about 450 million mobile-phone users on the mainland, and 250 million to 300 million of them have already experienced downloading songs through handsets,' he said. 'We are now discussing with China Telecom and China Unicom about offering our music search engine.'
