Murdered activist's quest hailed in songs
Indonesians from all walks of life have lent their musical skills to an album that celebrates the mission of murdered human rights activist Munir Thalib.
Munir, an outspoken critic of the military's human rights record, died of arsenic poisoning during a Garuda flight from Singapore to Amsterdam in September 2004.
The Album for Munir consists of 10 songs selected in a competition held by the Solidarity Action for Munir and two radio stations between October and January.
The songwriters include human rights activists and lawyers, as well as Amir Sadewo, a street seller of soto - Indonesia's clear chicken or beef soup.
Of the songs chosen, True Hero, For You, and So Long Human Rights Hero were listed as the favourites by listeners in a radio poll, the Jakarta Post reported.
Suciwati, Munir's widow, said she particularly liked Light, a song written by Asfinawati, the director of the Indonesian Law Aid Organisation.
Ms Suciwati, who like most Indonesians has only one name, said she cried when she heard the line 'peace has no meaning without justice'.
