Celebrity couple Sean Lau Ching-wan and Amy Kwok Oi-ming are thinking about adopting an orphan from Sichuan, following the devastating earthquake that hit the province earlier this month.

The earthquake that struck on May 12 has so far claimed close to 70,000 lives and some 20,000 people are reported to be missing in the populous northwest province.

Meanwhile, Unicef Hong Kong says that, based on figures provided by the mainland's Ministry of Civil Affairs, more than 4,000 children are now confirmed to have been orphaned by the quake and that number is expected to climb to 10,000.

At a recent charity auction, Lau (right, with Kwok) was reported as saying that it broke his heart to see the news about the earthquake orphans, which prompted him and his wife to consider adopting a child from Sichuan. But, he said, adopting a child from the mainland was not a simple thing to do.

'We have been thinking about adoption but we still don't know how to do it yet.'

The 43-year-old actor said there were other issues to deal with, such as paperwork, before they could bring a child into their home.
