Police arrest two over wedding banquet scam

Police arrested a man, 34, and a woman, 33, in Kwai Chung yesterday in connection with a wedding banquet scam at the Island Shangri-La in December. Guests were asked to place at least HK$100 in red packets provided by two fake hostesses who said it was for a draw to be held after the banquet. The two are also being questioned in connection with another incident involving a 19-year-old woman who was tricked out of HK$130,000 on January 14. She was approached by two uniformed women pretending to be members of staff at a branch of Hang Seng Bank in Nathan Road.

Increase in government paper use

The amount of paper used by the Government Logistics Department for printing publications reached 6,224 tonnes last year, up from 5,987 tonnes in 2006 - but lower than the 6,801 tonnes used in 2005.

Elderly woman's attacker sought

Police continued their search yesterday for a suspected mainland illegal immigrant who robbed and then tried to rape an 85-year-old woman who was walking towards Lei Yue Mun Park, off Chai Wan Road, at about 6am on Tuesday.
