It was a love of film that first brought Shanghai's Banana Monkey together.

The wildly infectious four-piece bonded over B-grade movies and found an outlet for their creative desires at their city's now legendary Five Dollar Shake gigs, which give the punters a dose of classic films on the big screen and local bands on stage.

And with a sound that reflects power pop influences from everyone from Iggy Pop to The Strokes, the Monkeys were an instant hit.

But just what made them stand out from the other acts remains somewhat of a mystery to lead singer Zhang 'Bono' Feng - not that he's complaining.

'Our music is pretty hard to describe,' he says. 'Listening to us is a bit like the feeling you get when you have lots of icy beers. You start to hear sounds that become awesome, and then everything you hear or see becomes fantastic.'

In the two years since they formed, Banana Monkey have built up a steady following in Shanghai and their first trip to Hong Kong comes as local promoter CYM Music extends its successful 'Beijing Explosion' concept to another mainland city.
