Tse Tak-fu, one of Hong Kong's most well-known doctors, thinks that no matter how the world changes over the years, being a father is essentially the same: dads want their children to be perfect.

The cardiologist, a former president of the World Heart Federation and non-executive director of Vitagreen Health Products which owns the Doctor's Choice vitamin brand, is a father of two. He also thinks that no matter the generation, children are cleverer than their parents.

'When I was growing up, I thought there was a big generation gap between me and my father, and I thought my father was not as clever as me,' said Dr Tse. 'When I became a dad, I thought I would be equal to my children, but I have realised that there is a gap, and for this generation, the gap is the result of information technology and young people's use of computers. Being a father now is the same as it was for my father - the younger generation is always more savvy than the one before.'

Dr Tse has two sons, Ronald, 24, and Ryan, 21. Ronald, who got married last year, has a master's in computer science from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island while Ryan is now studying at Georgetown University in Washington DC, majoring in political economy.

His wife Helen is also a doctor - a paediatrician and allergist - and Dr Tse said when he was younger he hoped his boys would study medicine, too.

'Perhaps [they chose not to become doctors] because we are both doctors,' said Dr Tse. 'Every now and then we had to work through the night. Perhaps our sons were put off by this.'

But despite them both being working parents, the Tse's always tried to find time to spend with their children. For Dr Tse, a child's interaction with his or her parents is crucial to their upbringing.
