Creative media course aims to provide students with essential knowledge needed to break into the booming industry

Hong Kong is rapidly becoming one of Asia's most important cultural and artistic centres and with projects such as the West Kowloon Cultural District taking shape the future looks bright for graduates seeking work in the creative media industry. The bright future will bring with it an increase in demand for suitable candidates to fill new roles such as curators and art programme directors, and graduates with advanced arts training will be highly prized.

Leading the way to fill these positions could be graduates of City University's Master of Fine Art in Creative Media course which was launched in 2002.

'In Hong Kong, more commercial galleries have been opened and they need a lot of art administrators,' said Ip Yuk-yiu, assistant professor at the university's School of Creative Media.

The objective of the course is to professionally train artists in the latest computer and digital technologies, Professor Ip said. 'We focus on contemporary practice with the use of new technologies.'

Professor Ip explained that graduates of the course had diverse career choices to choose from. 'They can be artists and some would like work as artists and devote themselves to art education at the same time. Many have become film directors,' Professor Ip said. The course is a two-year full-time programme, conducted in English. It is studio-oriented and is similar to courses offered by universities in the US. 'Our programme is more like a research or PhD degree,' he said.
