Traffic chaos expected as 500 drivers protest over diesel tax
More than 500 drivers in various kinds of vehicles plan to block roads this morning to call on the government to scrap the tax on diesel.
Warnings have been issued of traffic jams due to the protest, during which vehicles will drive through parts of the city including Kwai Chung, Kowloon West, the Western Harbour Tunnel and Central.
The demonstration - initiated by the Fuel Price Concerning Transportation Joint Conference - starts at 8.30am today, with more than 200 trucks and heavy vehicles expected to stop in the slow lane at Container Terminal 2 in Kwai Chung, from where another 20 container vehicles and buses will drive to Central.
At 10am, at least 60 garbage trucks and dumper trucks will block Wan Po Road in Tseung Kwan O, while 60 coaches will park near Central Pier in Man Kwong Street in Central. Twenty vans will drive slowly from the pier to the Murray Building.
The action also includes an hour-long slow-drive of 20 trucks and coaches in the heart of the business district - including Queen's Road Central, Pedder Street, Connaught Road Central and Cotton Tree Drive - from 11am.
Then 300 to 500 drivers will march from Statue Square in Central at 10.30am to Government House to seek talks with Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen.
