Yumla hosts Europe's finest
Entry to a club offering an overseas DJ often costs about HK$350. There's usually a gweilo name on a flier, a short rundown of the clubs they've played at, and a 'free' drink thrown in - without any proper explanation as to why you should pay so much just to be part of the experience.
Yes, the international DJ is often just a marketing ploy to get the queue extended beyond the velvet rope outside clubs, but Yumla in Central is about halfway into a series of free events featuring acclaimed European DJ/producers solely aimed at expanding the musical horizons of those on the dance floor.
The Yumla:Knows events have featured names you'd pay several hundred dollars to see elsewhere: French techno-electro producer Danton Eeprom, minimal-techno don Dean Muhsin and German producer Martin Eyerer, whose tracks pop up regularly on the Yumla resident DJs' sets.
Next up in the free series is a night on June 28 with Tom Clark at the controls. The German has had a significant influence on the house and techno music originating from Europe in the past decade as owner of the Highgrade imprint, his association with Tresor, the most important European techno label, and the E-Werk club night.
Clark will be supported by Yumla residents Markus Homm and Wendy Wenn that night from 11pm.
