A married man and his lover were jailed yesterday for using 'cruel  deception' to con a newlywed  woman into having sex with them.
Jailing chauffeur Danny Chan Tsun-tao, 45, and his mistress Wong Wai-sum, 32, Deputy High Court Judge Mr Justice Gareth Lugar-Mawson said Chan had shown no repentance for what he had done.
The judge, who described the case as 'very difficult, very unusual and rather disturbing', sentenced Chan to four years and four months, and Wong,  who is also married, to two years and two months.
The Court of First Instance heard they deceived Wong's best friend - identified in court as Mrs V - into  having sex between January and April last year, by promising to return  photographs and video taken secretly while she was having sex with Chan previously.
But Chan claimed in court that it had been love at first sight between him and Mrs V, and he believed she had agreed to have sex with him.
In his closing speech, prosecuting barrister Michael Arthur  had told the jury that some people might think Mrs V was stupid, weak and ignorant, but she was still protected by law.  He said: 'No woman is perfect.'
The two appeared in court yesterday after an adjournment of almost two months for reports.
Chan had been convicted by a jury on two counts of procuring an unlawful sexual act by false pretence, which he had denied, but acquitted on  a similar charge together with two counts of rape and one of attempted buggery.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of blackmail in connection with demands for HK$5,000 from two men, Mr X and Mr W, made after he discovered they had separately had  affairs with Wong.
Wong, who pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting rape and three procuring charges, testified for the prosecution in the trial of Chan, whose name was tattooed on her pubic area.
Yesterday, Mr Justice Lugar- Mawson  described the pair as  having been obsessed with sex at the time of the offence and that had 'turned their private sexual conduct to criminal offences'.
'I respect the jury's verdict that this is no longer a rape case. But the two of you had practised a cruel deception on Mrs V,' said the judge, who also found Chan 'a very manipulative man, particularly to women'.
The judge said Mrs V was deceived into having sex with Chan and performing lesbian acts with Wong all merely for the gratification of the defendants.
The judge also said reports revealed Chan was unrepentant about what he had done and did not accept the jury's verdict.
He said the procuring charge was seldom seen in Hong Kong's courts, but he recognised it was a very serious offence, which  warranted a maximum term of five years.
In mitigation, Wong's barrister Monica Chow  said Wong regretted having drawn her best friend into the situation and had decided to testify because she wanted justice for Mrs V.
She also cited psychiatric reports saying that Wong was genuinely fearful  of Chan, who forced  her in carrying out the  scheme.
But barrister Paul Tse  denied Chan had played a dominant role and said Wong had arranged for Mrs V to join the relationship to stop  Chan from leaving her.
Outside court, Mr Tse said Chan would appeal against his conviction and sentence.
He also pointed out that Chan's wife had written to the court to plead for mercy.
'She mainly told the court she found it was very painful at first to know about the incidents, but then she got used to it. She maintained her husband is not a bad person.'
