13 injured when Dragonair flight runs into turbulence near HK

Eight crew members and five passengers on a Dragonair flight were injured when the plane was hit by turbulence before landing in Hong Kong last night.

The Civil Aviation Department said it was alerted by the captain of the Airbus 330 just before landing that the plane had encountered turbulence and there were several injured on board.

Flight KA909 took off from Beijing Capital International Airport at 4.20pm and was due to land at Hong Kong at 8pm. The plane had 256 passengers and 18 crew on board.

The Civil Aviation Department said the aircraft was hit by a strong airstream outside Hong Kong. Ambulance and medical staff were on standby when the plane touched down safely at Chek Lap Kok at 7.51pm.

Eleven of the injured - eight crew members and three passengers - were taken to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment. Some of the injured were taken on stretchers with head and neck supports. The other two injured were treated at the airport.

Dragonair said it would carry out an investigation into what happened and would provide help for the affected passengers and crew. The airline said it regretted any inconvenience that may have been caused by the incident.
