Farce of PCCW sales call at 10.30pm
Two weeks ago, on a Sunday evening, I was woken up at 10.30pm when two PCCW technicians knocked on my door and asked to 'verify my converter box'. I let them in and called the identity verification number on the woman's identity card.
To my surprise, nobody was available to answer my call after 5pm. I then suspected that the 'technicians' might be inspecting my apartment for a possible later burglary, as they were dressed in ordinary street clothes. I called the police who quickly responded to my concerns.
It took 21/2 hours for the technicians to verify their identities. The only phone number they could provide was the mobile number of their direct supervisor. But the police wanted a number that they could confirm as belonging to PCCW.
Finally, the firm had to send a technician to their office in order to answer a phone number that could be verified as belonging to PCCW. After verifying my converter box, one of the technicians asked if I wanted to buy an HDTV upgrade. This was actually a sales call at 10.30pm on a Sunday. Many of my neighbours said they had also been visited that night by PCCW technicians attempting to sell them an HDTV upgrade.
I would like PCCW to respond to the following:
First, is it an acceptable business practice to conduct a sales or service call late on a Sunday evening?
