World's top satellite event has HK$160,000 up for grabs
The annual Crocodile Squash Challenge Cup will be held from tomorrow to Sunday this week, with local players ready to fight for both the men's and women's titles.
The world's top satellite event is organised by Hong Kong Squash with the financial support of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Now in its fourth year, the event brings top male and female players from around the world to compete for prize money totalling HK$160,000.
The competition is an ideal warm-up for Hong Kong's young and up-and-coming players as they prepare for the Asian Junior Individual Championships, which will be held between June 26 and 29 in Busan, South Korea.
The qualifying round of this year's competition starts tomorrow at the Hong Kong Squash Centre. Among the 11 junior players taking part are Leo Au Chun-ming, Nelson Chan Kai-chi, Fung Ji-yang, Liu Tsz-ling, Tong Tsz-wing, Ko Sin-ting and Carmen Lee.
For the senior players, the competition is a source of valuable world ranking points in both the Women's International Squash Players Association and the Professional Squash Association events.
Asian Games Silver Medallist Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin is the second seed in the women's main draw. With home advantage and the support of the local crowd, Chiu is going to be trying her best to take the title for the fourth time.
