The owner of the Big Boss nightclub in Tsim Sha Tsui was yesterday denied approval to call expert evidence from a specialist accountant in a HK$20 million claim against the driver of a car involved in an accident in which he suffered a leg injury.

Billionaire Law Cheuk, 67, is suing Margaret Chan Fung-luen over the accident, claiming her Jaguar rammed into his Toyota outside the Kowloon Tong Club on December 13, 2003.

The damages sought by Mr Law, sole owner of the Tanfory Company that operates Big Boss - one of Hong Kong's biggest and best-known clubs - include HK$10.6 million for loss of earnings.

His lawyer had sought authority from a High Court master to call a forensic accountant to explain Mr Law's financial arrangements with Tanfory and his property development company, China Shine, but this was denied.

In the Court of First Instance yesterday, Mr Justice John Saunders upheld that ruling. The judge said the case should be decided on factual matters, not opinions.

Mr Law has claimed he had to take 715 days of sick leave as a result of the accident.
