This place has been famous locally for more than 20 years for its Cantonese lacquered duck and barbecued pork. It also served noodles, although with less success. There are often long queues at lunchtime. Easiest is to buy a takeaway and eat it somewhere else, because the handful of tables are usually occupied by office and construction workers, and tourists. They bake their own buns in a traditional firewood oven. Only 500 sandwiches are produced daily, 800 on public holidays. Expect queues. The cafe also serves noodles and other sandwiches. Leitaria I Son 65 Avenida Almeida Ribeiro, Macau peninsula (at the Senado Square) Tel: (853) 2837 3104 There are four branches of the I Son dairy (leitaria) in Macau, the most popular being located at the Senado Square in the very heart of Macau's downtown area (look for the big cow sign on a pink colonial building). The business started 50 years ago when owners used to keep cows in their backyard to produce fresh milk. The dairy is famous for its cold or warm milk or egg custard pudding, ginger steamed milk custard pudding and steamed milk and coffee pudding. They also serve pork chop buns and fabulous ham and egg sandwiches. It also serves cakes, custom-made sandwiches and freshly squeezed fruit juices. All business is for takeaway; there are no tables or chairs. Nga Heong Noodles 27A Rua Fernao Mendes Pinto, Macau peninsula Tel: (853) 2852 6039/2855 2711 Serving Burmese food since 1978, this noodle shop is renowned for its fish soup with noodles (HK$9) and other inexpensive dishes. Chicken and beef curries with noodles or palata with beef are other specialties, and it also serves traditional Cantonese noodle dishes.
