Registered professionals are needed for critical care of patients during long-distance air transport

A company that specialises in worldwide patient transport wants to recruit registered nurses for its new base in Hong Kong.

AirMed Asia is seeking highly motivated, exceptional critical care nurses for air ambulance transport on board its custom designed aircraft, which is permanently configured with advanced medical equipment.

Its highly experienced crew are accustomed to the intricacies of providing long-distance transport for patients, having completed about 12,000 missions in more than 150 countries on six continents.

'Duties include the primary care of any type of patient who requires transport, usually to higher levels of care or to their home facilities,' said Kate Thibault, AirMed Asia's clinical manager. 'If you are flying, this would require flights up to two to three days long if transport is to Europe or the United States.

'Depending on the status of the patient, this could include critical care monitoring of all vital signs, monitoring and treatment of any symptoms, knowledge of flight physiology, and the effects of different types of injuries and disease processes - and working closely with the rest of the medical teams and teams on the ground.'

AirMed Asia has one aircraft based in Hong Kong and hopes to build three full medical teams, with one physician and two flight registered nurses per team.

The company has more than 200 employees worldwide, mainly based in the United States. It has been operating in Hong Kong since March.

'AirMed is striving as always to be at the top,' Ms Thibault said. 'It is an incredibly professional company to work for and puts such high standards on itself that the safety record is flawless, and equipment and training are second to none,' she said.

The company is keen to hire energetic, motivated, team-oriented people.

Successful recruits are more likely to be individuals keen to broaden their experiences, enrich their learning opportunities, and are excited about the adventures and travel opportunities offered by AirMed Asia.

The ideal candidate must have three to five years of critical care experience, or previous flight experience, and relevant certifications, and an unrestricted passport.

Ms Thibault said AirMed offered tremendous educational and training support, including the provision of all requisite re-certifications.

Once on board, the new recruits will be required to work on a roster basis.

'You are on call for the whole time you are on roster. With air medical flights you never know what time you will be required to work - this could be during the middle of the night,' she said. 'When people are really sick, they need to be evacuated quickly.'
