Hong Kong women's tchoukball team just miss place in World Games 2009
In both the women's and the men's sections, Chinese Taipei were the champions and Singapore the runners-up in the Asia Pacific Tchoukball Championships held last Sunday at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. They are going to represent Asia in the World Games 2009 in Taiwan.
There were six men's teams and three women's teams competing in the three-day tournament. The top two will qualify for next year's World Games in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The tournament was held as a round robin.
Teams from Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Chinese Taipei were at last weekend's competition, and as Chinese Taipei is a world-class team, it is no surprise they won both the men's and women's events. Singapore was the first runners-up in both men's and women's sections. Hong Kong's men came fifth while the women came third, handing Singapore the World Games berth by just one point in the game which ended 39-40.
'We took turns to lead and in the last two minutes, we were tie at 38. Singapore was more experienced and doing extremely well in defence. We lost because we let the pressure affect our performance.' said Hong Kong women's team captain Mak Ming-sze.
Despite losing the chance to take part in World Games, Mak said the game against Singapore has been a valuable experience.
Mak is a school physical education teacher.
