Tai Po villager fights off would-be robbers Two robbers suspected of being mainland illegal immigrants fled empty-handed when a villager they tried to rob put up a struggle in Ping Long, Tai Po, at about 2am. One of the two men hit the victim - a 29-year-old man - with a wooden pole before running away. The victim was treated for minor head injuries at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. 20 flee village blaze About 20 people were evacuated from a village in Ngau Tam Mei, Yuen Long, when a single-storey house burst into flames at about 12.30am. Five hurt in multiple taxi crash Five people were injured in a crash between three taxis at the junction of Chatham Road South and Austin Road in Yau Ma Tei shortly after 4am. Two drivers and three women passengers were treated for minor injuries at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Dog leads to drink-driving charge A motorist was arrested for drink-driving after his car hit railings and toppled on to one side in Clear Water Bay Road in Sai Kung at about 3.30am. The man, 39, said he lost control of the car while swerving to avoid a dog. He was released on bail of HK$5,000. Firemen free pair from wreckage A driver and his passenger were trapped and had to be freed by firemen after their truck slammed into the back of a coach in Wing Tai Road, Chai Wan, at about 11.30am. The two men, aged 27 and 53, and a female passenger in the coach were injured. The younger man was in serious condition and the 53-year-old driver was in stable condition in Eastern Hospital. The woman was discharged after treatment. Man, 23, in attempted overdose A 23-year-old man was found unconscious in a Chai Wan Road flat in Chai Wan at about 1.30am after swallowing pills in a suicide bid. He was in a stable condition in Eastern Hospital.
