A youth was taken to hospital in a coma after he was injured in a motorcycle accident during a trip to Koh Samui organised by students from West Island School.
A parent from the Pok Fu Lam school said the young man was riding the bike with a West Island student near a waterfall on the holiday island when the accident happened last Sunday. The West Island student suffered injuries to his arm.
Jennifer Saran, whose 15-year-old daughter attends the school, said the youth - a former West Island student - was taken to the Thai International Hospital in Koh Samui before being transferred to another hospital on the island for surgery on Monday. The West Island student had been flown to Hong Kong for treatment.
Ms Saran said the holiday in Koh Samui was an annual tradition among West Island pupils that served as a 'rite of passage' for students leaving the school after completing their A-level exams.
West Island principal Jane Foxcroft could not be contacted last night. English Schools Foundation chief executive Heather Du Quesnay said she did not have full details of the incident but confirmed a former student had been left in a coma after a motorcycle accident.
'The young man concerned is not a student of ours. He left West Island School two years ago,' she said, adding that she believed he was now attending a school in Abu Dhabi. 'There is no official school trip from West Island School in Koh Samui, however some of the students may be there on their own.'
