Challenging position for top-notch professional

Manager wanted to provide technical advice on accounting and auditing practices for global firm

An opportunity has arisen for a high-flying accounting professional who has a keen understanding of international practice standards.

The fast-expanding local member firm of a global accountancy organisation is seeking to recruit a senior manager of professional practice development, assurance division.

Grant Thornton Hong Kong is a member firm of Grant Thornton International, which has member and correspondent firms in more than 100 countries.

The new recruit would serve as a senior member of the firm's professional practice department, said Fanny Hsiang, Grant Thornton's director of professional practice.

The department's major function was to ensure the professional excellence and quality services of the firm, including compliance with relevant professional standards, Ms Hsiang said.

The new recruit will provide technical advice on accounting and auditing issues.

Responsibility for the internal and external publication of technical materials, and the organisation of training seminars and presentations are part of the job description.

'You will have to work closely with the senior management and professionals across the firm,' she said.

'You will also be exposed to opportunities, and given responsibility for offering guidance and advice to other professionals.'

The position covers the Hong Kong and mainland offices, with about 1,000 staff.

'This role is challenging,' she said. 'Updates of the professional standards and the rules and regulations relating to the industry are frequent, and the professional standards are getting more difficult to interpret and implement.

'People in this department must learn about all these changes and revisions in a timely manner, and decide [how to] forward their knowledge to others in the firm and to clients.'

The ideal candidate is a degree holder and a member of a professional accounting body with at least eight years' experience with an international accounting firm.

As the gatekeeper of the firm's professional quality, applicants must have a good knowledge of Hong Kong and international professional standards, and an analytical mind.

Prior working experience in technical advisory matters is a definite advantage.

Applicants will be required to go through a computer assessment to test them for traits which are essential to the role.

'Thereafter, I will have an interview with the candidate,' she said.

'This offers a chance for both the firm and the candidate to understand each other better.

'I will focus on the candidate's interpersonal and communication skills, such as their ability to express ideas clearly and in an organised way.'
