The storm in global investment markets is about to pass, say some commentators, who suggest now may be a good time to buy, at least into certain types of asset.

Asieh Mansour, chief economist and strategist at RREEF Alternative Investments, a unit of Deutsche Bank, said the time to invest might already have arrived because distressed companies could be forced to come to the market.

She suggests investments with exposure to infrastructure projects; mezzanine capital; growth capital; venture capital; funds that specialised in leveraged buyouts; and investments in private real estate.

And Ms Mansour said that even though transaction volumes and issuance of commercial-mortgage-backed securities had dwindled since the financial crisis began, the outlook for the property sector remained positive.

'Prospects for real estate are healthy,' she said.

'Investor expectations of returns are more realistic and are lower worldwide for the short to medium term. Supply and demand are in balance in many markets. Rental growth, while slowing, remains positive.'
