There was no indication that a beloved martial arts master once lived at this Cumberland Road address. It is now a love motel, a place for couples to be alone for a few hours. But love motels are said to be run by a double standard. There is an 'anything goes' attitude for heterosexual couples - while two men, or two women, who want to rent a room are asked to leave.
The Sunday Morning Post set out to test those rumours, to see if the love motel operators would briefly accept two same-sex partners as guests.
The security guard greeted us and escorted us into the brightly lit foyer, where the pair of us, two men, were looked over by an older Asian woman.
The lower floor felt more like a clinic than a home. It was brightly lit, sanitised. One long, narrow hallway branched off the entranceway. We stood by a flight of stairs and, in English, explained to our hosts that we wanted a room for an hour.
