The 17-year-old brother of prodigy March Boedihardjo, the city's youngest university entrant, has been admitted to Oxford University's doctorate programme to become one of its youngest PhD students.

Horatio Boedihardjo, who has just obtained first-class honours in a bachelor's degree in mathematics at Oxford, will leapfrog to pursue a doctorate in maths in September.

'I've been very lucky,' the prodigy, who left Hong Kong for Oxford when he was 14, said humbly.

He was referring to his luck in being allowed to skip a few years of high-school education; having a father who showed him various maths tricks when he was small; and meeting a professor who inspired him to apply for Oxford's PhD programme.

'You are influenced by the people around you,' he said, also thanking his Oxford tutor, Janet Dyson, for admitting him three years ago.

'I believe it [being admitted as a PhD student] is just a start for me, to change this good fortune into success in the future,' Horatio said.
