There has been a fresh, new voice on RTHK Radio 4, introducing classical music and exchanging views with experienced presenter Raymond Chung Tsz-ho. The voice, however, does not belong to some broadcasting veteran. It's the voice of Form Six student Carmen Leung Pui-ka, the co-host of the recently launched Radio 4 Buddies, a programme aimed at broadening the appeal of classical music among young listeners. As she sits in the recording room of RTHK Radio 4 in her blue-and-white school uniform, the youthful appearance of the Diocesan Girls' School student belies her sophisticated and profound knowledge of classical music. 'I have listened to classical music since I was a child. My favourite classical musicians are the four Bs: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Bela Bartok,' said the 17-year-old, who plays the piano, cello, organ and violin. Carmen joined RTHK as a part-time presenter after beating candidates that included music majors and middle-aged music connoisseurs. Before her stint as a co-host, she did some voice work for RTHK's programmes on classical music. 'I don't know why they employed me. There were people around the age of 40 and 50 among the interviewees,' said Carmen. Her bubbly personality and youthful approach to the genre might be the reason. 'Her voice is beautiful and soothing. She can explain difficult and complex musical concepts in simple, accessible terms. We research musicians together and I give her a lot of leeway when choosing music,' said Chung. The key to broadening the appeal of classical music is picking songs that are easy to listen to, according to Carmen. 'Many young people are put off by the slow rhythm of classical music. However, there are many classical songs that are bouncy and vibrant. By adding youthful elements like on-air role-playing and online audience Q and A sessions, we want the show to be a primer on classical music,' she explained. The energetic presenter also said music helped her with her studies. 'Listening to oldies and classical songs soothes my mind. Playing classical songs on the piano also trains my concentration and patience,' said Carmen, who will join the University of Hong Kong this year through the Early Admission Scheme. She will take up a dual degree programme in business and law. Radio 4 Buddies is broadcast every Saturday from 2pm to 4pm on RTHK Radio 4 (FM97.6 - 98.9).
