Canadian model killed during robbery at Shanghai flat: police
Shanghai police confirmed yesterday that a Canadian model had been murdered, and relatives had been told that she was probably the victim of a robbery that turned violent.
Breaking an official silence on the case, Shanghai Public Security Bureau said Diana Gabrielle O'Brien was found dead in the building where she lived in the city's Changning district. The case was first reported through the police hotline at about 5.30am on Monday.
It is rare for a foreign national to be murdered on the mainland. Last year, Shanghai had 214 homicides.
'This case is under further investigation,' a brief police statement said.
O'Brien, 22, entered the mainland on June 24. Family and friends at her home in Saltspring Island, British Columbia, said they were desperate for more information.
Jesse Blanchette, a friend, said Canadian police had told relatives O'Brien was killed in a robbery, apparently passing on information from the Shanghai authorities. 'It sounds like it was a robbery gone bad. I think it was a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time,' he said.
