Major infrastructure projects proposed by the government, coupled with the demand for experienced engineers in Macau and the mainland, are likely to put a huge strain on engineering resources in Hong Kong, according to a local recruitment consultant.
'Demand will outweigh supply,' said Simon Porter, senior manager for construction and property at Hays, which specialises in recruiting professionals for the construction sector.
Engineers of all disciplines, with varying levels of experience, and architects and quantity surveyors will be needed as the initial planning and design of the government's 10 major infrastructure projects gather pace.
Several of these projects are expected to reach more advanced stages in 2009 and 2010.
The projects include the MTR's extension lines, the redevelopment of the former Kai Tak airport, and the highway linking Tuen Mun and Chek Lap Kok.
Philco Wong, the chief operating officer and executive director of Gammon Construction, said: 'The subsequent construction boom is likely to begin by the end of 2009.'
