People considering doctoral programmes may be interested in a workshop to be held on Thursday. Kaplan Hong Kong will host the event, which will discuss the aim and structure of doctoral and doctor of business administration (DBA) programmes offered by the University of South Australia through the institute.

The managing director of Kaplan Hong Kong, Josephine Jim, said the institute had seen an increase in demand for PhD studies by candidates who wanted to use the qualification in a business rather than an academic career. She said these candidates hoped to gain a competitive advantage from the postgraduate group which had seen a marked increase in studies at the master's level.

'There has been a significant increase in the number of self-financing sub-degree providers, who give better recognition to operational leaders who have a PhD qualification,' Dr Jim said. She added that tertiary institutions hoping to upgrade to a private university would generate extra administrative and managerial positions to manage the change and to increase the institute's competitiveness in the market.

'We can also see a trend from our enrolments that an increasing number of education administrators in local institutes are studying a PhD or planning to in the next few years.' She added that commercial and business sectors had started to appreciate experienced staff pursuing a PhD qualification, believing that the higher qualification would benefit the corporation and strengthen its status in the field.

Amy Lau, a senior consultant at subsidiary APMI Kaplan Hong Kong, said enrolment for DBA programmes was up 30 per cent this year and that inquiries indicated there would be a further increase next year. 'More large-scale companies regard highly qualified staff as their competitive strength and expect more innovation and strategic decision-making through research.

'The research degree holders, especially at doctoral level, have more advantages in the market,' Ms Lau said.
