Multiple Grammy-award-winning and platinum-selling singer-song writer John Mayer wowed fans with his acoustic guitar virtuosity at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last December. But now Hong Kong fans can share the experience with what is probably the best live recording of the year, the double CD, Where The Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles. The concert is separated into three parts: Acoustic set, John Mayer Trio set and Band set. The acoustic set features five Mayer favourites: Neon, Stop This Train, In Your Atmosphere, Daughters and Free Fallin'. These songs feature Mayer on acoustic guitar with little to no accompaniment. All of them have a laidback vibe, from the bluesy jazz Neon to the mellow, folksy Free Fallin'. The second set features songs performed by the John Mayer Trio, a group that Mayer formed with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan in 2005. The eight tracks demonstrate what Mayer learned from his collaborations with blues greats like B.B. King, Eric Clapton and Herbie Hancock. Come When I Call is one of Mayer's stabs at a classic blues song, featuring an impressive guitar solo in the middle. The set also includes two Jimi Hendrix songs, Wait Until Tomorrow and Bold As Love. Mayer uses these to show off his skills and prove that he doesn't just strum, but can jam with the best of them. The third set is full of the bluesy pop sound that most people will enjoy most. It starts with Mayer's 2006 hit Waiting On The World To Change. The song's full sound is in total contrast to the simple, unaccompanied guitar of the first set. This progression in style throughout the concert mirrors Mayer's musical evolution. When he first started performing in 1999, he focused on solo pop songs, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, before moving onto collaborations with the aforementioned blues artists and even dabbling in rap music, performing on tracks for artists such as Common and Kanye West. There are some wonderful renditions of Mayer's work in this set, from the tranquil blending of guitars in The Heart Of Life to the amazing guitar solo intro to Belief. This is an amazing CD set - you essentially get three albums for the price of one. All the numbers performed at the concert are better renditions of the originals, with some of the weaker songs from his albums getting an amazing tune-up in this live performance. If you're a John Mayer fan this is an absolute must-buy. And if you're yet to realise Mayer's musical genius, you have no idea what you're missing out on.
