Combating climate change and other environmental challenges are among the tasks France has set itself to address as the nation commences its presidency of the European Union.
French nationals in Hong Kong will recognise the importance President Nicolas Sarkozy has placed on these and other issues as concerns that are shared across the world.
The French government has vowed to deliver an ambitious energy package ahead of international talks next year on minimising climate change, and the EU is central to driving those global efforts.
Before a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe, as France took the helm of the EU, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso welcomed the new presidency and said: 'What we need most today is political courage and candour and Nicolas Sarkozy lacks neither.'
Food safety, health, and economy and finance were among other areas of concern Mr Sarkozy said needed to be tackled.
'The European Union has both the assets and the ambition to meet these expectations. It is built on strong values which have inspired the European project since its inception and shaped its identity in the world,' Mr Sarkozy said. 'To meet these challenges and serve the general European interest, the French presidency will need the support and engagement of everyone.'
France's role in international affairs will be watched with keen interest in China, particularly with Mr Sarkozy due to attend the Olympics opening ceremony and the commitment he has expressed to heal divisions following disruptions during the torch relay.
