Marks & Spencer climbs on green bandwagon with 'Plan A' commitment

Going green is the mantra du jour for every self-professed conscientious company. Marks & Spencer is the latest to join the crusade, announcing its Plan A manifesto at the Central store on Wednesday. 'We call it Plan A because, after all, there is no Plan B,' M&S Asia-Pacific boss Jill Morton preached.

Yes, that means M&S is corporately committing to eco-aspects such as fair trade, sustainable resources, waste reduction and minimising its carbon footprint. With such local celebs as singer Ivana Wong Yuen-chi, actress Theresa Lee Yee-hung and model Lisa Selesner on hand, plus WWF representative Liam Salter (pictured, with Morton) to lend credibility, Morton detailed the M&S agenda for organic cotton, green packaging and the elimination of artificial colours and flavours in snacks, to all of which Salter gave his thumbs-up.

'We can't expect people to make massive changes in their lifestyles for climate change, and we understand that,' he said. However, some things in town are just absurd anti-environmental behaviour, Salter noted. 'When I go to a cinema, I have to take a jacket in the heat of summer. That strikes me as extremely peculiar.'
