Rene Liu Rou-ying is best known as an accomplished actress having featured in widely acclaimed films such as Happy Birthday, A World without Thieves, 20 30 40 and the newly released Run Papa Run.
However, and unusually, the Taiwanese star's singing is comparable to her acting skills. In fact, Liu first appeared on the Taiwan showbiz scene as a singer in the mid-1990s, after studying music in California. While she was still a struggling artist she was spotted by renowned director Sylvia Chang Ai-chia, whose movie Siao Yu won Liu her first Best Actress award in 1995.
Her acting and singing careers blossomed together but she's not the type of singer who pours out all her emotions at the top of her voice - her sweet, mellow tones have earned her the nickname Milk Tea. Together with beautifully written lyrics, her voice is like a gentle autumn breeze - a blend of the nostalgic and the bitter-sweet that tugs at your heart strings.
Liu's former record company recently released Rene, a 16-track collectors' album of her earlier works that includes Love You More and More, her most famous track and a karaoke super hit. Other songs on the album include Heresay and Know it or Not.
However, some of Liu's best tracks, particularly Afterwards, are not on the list and their absence makes the collection incomplete.
