Hong Kong superstar couple Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Carina Lau Ka-ling finally tied the knot yesterday at a star-studded wedding in Bhutan in front of more than 100 guests - including Bhutanese royalty - after nearly 20 years of dating.
The Buddhist ceremony began on a drizzling morning with prayers and chanting by monks who also offered blessings to Lau, who was wearing a traditional Chinese red gown, and Leung, dressed in a white suit.
After the ceremony, Lau re-emerged in a western wedding gown and the newly weds cut the cake before the guests. Wong Kar-wai, who directed both stars in his classics Days of Being Wild and Ashes of Time, delivered the speech on behalf of all the guests. Other stars attending included Canto-pop diva Faye Wong, art director and costume designer William Cheung Suk-ping and actress Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia.
'Thank you everyone for making such a long trip to attend our wedding. I believe it is destiny that gathers us together here, and I hope all of you share the joy and happiness with us,' Lau said in thanking the guests.
The ceremony at the Uma Paro resort, which charges between US$250 and US$1,000 per night, was followed by cocktails and a dinner party, said Jet Tone Films, which represents the couple. Media were denied entry to the resort.
In a press statement, Lau said she and Leung decided on a wedding date last year and decided in April to stage the ceremony in Bhutan.
