Tata Consultancy Services, one of the world's largest information technology outsourcing firms, is ramping up its mainland business with forays into Guangdong and into the restructuring of the country's telecommunications sector.

These strategic initiatives came six years after Tata Consultancy, the technology services arm of India's Tata Group, set up operations on the mainland, said Girija Pande, the unit's regional director and head of Asia-Pacific operations.

'We are in the process of opening this third quarter our southern China delivery centre in Shenzhen, which will serve large domestic enterprises, Hong Kong companies doing business on the mainland and regional companies located in Hong Kong,' Mr Pande said.

The firm, which started its mainland operations in cities such as Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai, will tap Guangdong's vast and thriving manufacturing and financial services sectors. The company, which last week posted net profit of US$296 million on revenue of US$1.5 billion in its fiscal first quarter to June, also has a growing practice in Hong Kong.

Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies, the country's largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, and Ping An Insurance, the mainland's second-largest insurer, were the first major customers in the province to sign up with Tata Consultancy, Mr Pande said. Financial terms and project details were not given.

The Guangdong operation is expected shortly to add up to 400 new employees to Tata Consultancy's roughly 1,300 workers on the mainland, about 90 per cent of whom are Chinese.
