THE United States Government, in a rare comment on the row over Hong Kong's political reforms, has given its tacit backing to Governor Chris Patten.
A State Department official said the US believed a peaceful handover should be sought.
''The US wants to see Hong Kong's prosperity and stability ensured before and after 1997. The confidence of Hong Kong's people depends on a practical future framework of institutions and practices.''
