Your chance to conquer the world Aspiring rock stars over the years have sought worldwide fame through various 'battle of the bands' competitions, but the scope of these contests has often been limited and the prizes on offer a little underwhelming for such a gruelling undertaking.

A competition coming to China for the first time this year addresses these shortcomings, expanding the reach of the talent search to 36 countries and offering US$100,000 in prize money to the winning outfit.

For Greater China, the Global Battle of the Bands will be holding heats in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shanghai, with plans to incorporate Beijing and all major cities next year.

There will be three nights of preliminary heats in Hong Kong with the top three bands from each night playing at the Hong Kong finals. Later, the winning bands from Shenzhen and Shanghai will come to Hong Kong to compete for the 'China' title.

The competition was launched in London by GBOB International in 2004 and the world finals are held at the city's famed Astoria Theatre. Winning bands from all national finals receive the rock-star treatment, with flights and accommodation paid for by the organisers.

Hong Kong has an impressive track record in such competitions, with rockers Audiotraffic almost winning the 2004 World Battle of the Bands finals, and metal outfit Qiu Hong (above) securing the world title in 2005.
