Old regional rivalry turns into a video song contest on YouTube
The war of videos continues as YouTube netizens carry on a lively debate about whether the Lion City or the Pearl of the Orient is the superior city. It was started by Singaporean amateur musicians Katie Oh and Taz the Raz with their quirky self-parody of a music video that purports to show the city state in all its glamour and glory, with its democracy and freedom.
They might have inadvertently achieved the opposite. The four-minute clip, written in classic Singlish, has now met its match. 'Wokstarz', an anonymous Hong Kong patriot, has struck one for our beloved city. Katie and Taz clearly show more comic flair, but at least wokstarz' lyrics are written in proper English. It begins:
A typical day at our house
I was eating chewing gum
Dad was reading the Far Eastern Economic Review
Mum was moaning about the government.
