For some of the Equestrian Company staff, the biggest challenge is not working long shifts in the heat, but making sure their trousers stay up.

Errors in sample sizes have meant that many of the people hired for the Olympics equestrian events are working in clothes far too loose.

'Two XL?' one slim security worker said, referring to the trousers she was given. 'This is Hong Kong, not America.' She said her shirt and shoes fit and it was just her trousers that needed to be cinched with a belt.

Other workers laughed at their uniforms, with one man exclaiming that he had been given trousers sized 4XL, which has a hip size of 44 inches, or 112cm.

The men's trousers range from XS to 5XL and the women's from XXS to 2XL, although each increment in size gives just 3.6cm more hip room. A women's 2XL has a hip size of 103cm (40.5 inches), but one tailor says the average Hong Kong woman has hips that measure 91.4 cm (36 inches).

'It's been chaotic,' said one police officer who had requested an M but was given an L. 'We actually submitted our sizes before, but in the end the sizes are different.'

Police officers guarding the venues will don Olympics uniforms.
