Hong Kong's two-week craze for commemorative Olympic banknotes came to an end yesterday with tens of thousands flocking to bank branches for what could be their last chance to grab the notes.

Crowds of buyers were seen yesterday outside each of the 44 branches of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) on the last day of the first phase of the sale.

Around 2.8 million sets, in five different packages, have been snapped up in the city since July 16.

The banknotes have become a way for many to make a quick profit.

Members of a family of 15 have queued at different branches across the city since Saturday in the scramble for banknotes, mostly for resale.

A young member of the family, Mak Chun-shing, 14, was queuing alone outside the headquarters of the Bank of China in Central yesterday morning.

'Today, my cousin is queuing in Tai Po.' he said. 'My uncle is queuing in Mei Foo. My mother and my father are queuing in Tsuen Wan and Tsing Yi.'
