An online advocacy group is gaining momentum in its fight for transport fare concessions for local students studying outside Hong Kong.

A forum on facebook.com, a social networking website, has been joined by more than 1,500 people and 460 have signed an online petition.

'Our parents are both citizens and taxpayers of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and they are hit by spiralling inflation as much as, if not worse than, everyone else,' group member John Mak said. 'Why can't we enjoy benefits from the government and transport companies?'

He said letters had been sent to various government departments, which had thanked the group for its suggestions.

John, 16, who attends a school in Britain, said it was only fair to include students overseas in fare concessions that were announced recently.

'This so-called relief package does not in any way benefit us, and our families are also part of society.'

News of the fare concessions came after Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen announced an HK$11 billion relief package.
